FLEXIBLE NOISE PROTECTION IN INNOVATIVE DESIGN

HEIDINGSFELD VIADUCT ON THE BAB A3 NEAR WÜRZBURG GETS INNOVATIVE NOISE PROTECTION
As a European highway, the A3 is one of the most important roads in the German traffic network. Due to the tripling of traffic volume on the Frankfurt – Würzburg stretch since it was built in 1963 and a further forecast increase in traffic volume, a six-lane expansion on this stretch became essential in order to be able to counteract a stagnant flow of traffic in the future.

However, to realize this construction project, a new viaduct was first required, the first section of which was completed in March 2018, after four years of construction, with the Frankfurt direction lane. Over a length of 570 meters, the route now first disappears into the Katzenberg Tunnel, which was also newly built, before it flows onto the new 630-meter-long viaduct.

In close cooperation with the company R. KOHLHAUER GmbH, the first part of the new viaduct was equipped with six-meter-high noise barriers in a construction period of only three months. In total, over 300 steel posts and approx. 3,000 m² of acrylic glass elements were installed along the entire length.

By changing the parameters field by field, a total of 1,200 transparent KOHLHAUER SCORSA© FLEX noise barrier elements in 600 different formats were installed. The walls installed here impress with their innovative, modular and highly flexible design and fully meet the special technical challenges of this project.

Even at this early stage, a noticeable reduction in noise nuisance for local residents can be observed. Together with the lowering of the roadway and the use of a noise-reducing road surface, there will be a noise reduction of up to 10 dB when the entire construction project is finally completed in 2021.
